Home Free

Stuff ties you down. The new car, the big house … it all cost life hours and then you have to protect it. It’s a trap.

We divested 4 years ago. We gave away almost everything. We called the kids and said, “Anything you were going to get when we die, you’re getting now.” We held the mother of all garage sales. We became proficient on eBay. The folks at our local Goodwill hailed us by name.

We’re paring down again. Our plan is to move into the Airstream and travel the country.

No stuff in the world can rival the freedom of doing what you want, when you want, going where you want, for as long as you want. Our home will be wherever we like the view. When international wanderlust hits, we’ll just park the Airstream and hop on a plane to … well, sky’s the limit.

Chronicle Worlds; Legacy Fleet

  • Loyalty, a new short story by KJFieler will appear Samuel Peralta’s new Chronicle Worlds anthology. Coming to a screen near you in March/April 2019, paperbacks expected spring-summer 2019

Intro: Astrophysicist Stephen Hawking expressed his concern that “artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.” Tesla founder Elon Musk says AI may be “our biggest existential threat.”Not everyone is fatalistic.

Francesca Rossi, President of the International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence, doesn’t believe AI will necessarily threaten humanity, but he does espouse the need to ensure that programming makes them “safe, friendly and aligned with human values,”  but then admits, “This is not an easy task, since even humans are not rationally following their principles most of the time.”

No sweat. We’ll just program in Isaac Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics.

Ah, but look how many different outcomes have been imagined by people who struggled to define the concepts of loyalty and compassion. Loyalty to whom? Is it ethical and morally correct to erase from existence a species, such as Star Trek’s Borg, if they refuse to allow us to live in peace? How do we define compassion? Is it compassionate to execute someone if he is suffering? Define suffering.
